Bridging the Gap: Technical & Organizational Maturity in DueDive-Assessed Companies in 2024
Many of the companies that DueDive assessed have a gap between their current state and their goals, particularly in the areas of technical debt, organizational maturity, and scalability.
Technical Value: Some organizations have a small code base, which results in a low technical value that doesn't offer much protection against competitors. Conversely, other organizations have large, mature systems that result in very high technical value, but these systems also have some technical debt.
Technical Debt: Many companies have accumulated technical debt due to missing test code, the use of older technologies, code readability due to unnecessary code complexity, system documentation or other factors that make the system harder to maintain and develop. Some organizations have outdated dependencies that pose security risks or have other security issues like secrets and tokens in the code. Despite the overall low technical debt, quite a few companies still perform below average in this KPI when compared to other years.
Scalability: While some organizations have good scalability, most need to improve their scalability to handle growth in new customers.
Team and Organization: Many companies have small teams that are dependent on individual knowledge or need to expand or reorganize to support future growth. Some organizations need to improve team cohesion, or add specific roles, such as a CTO, testers, or support staff. Many companies lack formal processes leading to average process maturity and need to improve their internal processes to prepare for future growth.
In summary, the organizations are at different stages in their life cycle, but they all need to make strategic and operational improvements to achieve their goals. These include addressing technical debt, updating dependencies, improving scalability, and improving team structure and organizational maturity. Some organizations also need to make strategic market adjustments which is out of the scope to DueDive analyses.
